Sascha Hoog has been Maintenance Manager at DocMorris for seven years and knows the complex processes in the highly automated logistics center like no other. When asked what drives him and his team every day, he answers without hesitation:

"We are basically the backbone of logistics. Even the smallest disruptions can bring the entire material flow to a standstill, and we are the ones who keep everything running."

"Every intervention is like open-heart surgery for us", says Sascha, describing his team's responsibility. Ten colleagues work under his leadership to ensure that the systems remain operational at all times. Covering more than 30,000 m², two highly automated warehouses – a miniload with 145,000 storage locations and a shuttle warehouse with 46,400 storage locations – form the heart of the center. They are complemented by automatic picking machines, conveyor technology, automatic carton erectors and sealers, label systems, and complex sensor technology that efficiently control the flow of materials.

When asked why work in his field is so varied, the maintenance manager replies with a smile:

"You never really know what to expect. Is it a simple cable break? Is it a mechanical defect in the storage and retrieval machine? Or is it the IT control system for the conveyor technology? Finding that out is incredibly exciting." The complexity is enormous: each storage compartment is mechanically coded, sensors constantly monitor positions and movements, and conveyor belts transport thousands of order containers per day. Even the smallest deviations — such as a dirty rail, a blocked sensor, or a slipped film — can interrupt the flow of materials.

"Moments like these show how important our job is and how creative you have to be to find the cause."

For Sascha, it is precisely this variety that makes the work so interesting: "It's never routine. Every day brings new challenges, and we grow as a team."

Teamwork is particularly important to Sascha. "Accompanying training is essential for us. Experienced colleagues always take the less experienced ones with them. Four eyes see more than two."

His approach: Not everyone has to be able to do everything right away, but everyone should have the opportunity to develop further.

"If someone says, I'd like to learn that, then we make it possible. We offer training and pass on our knowledge." This creates a working environment in which everyone can get involved and try new things. Sascha emphasizes:

"In the end, it's always a combination of passing on knowledge, learning from each other, and becoming smarter together."

His team's demanding task requires not only technical expertise, but also a high degree of responsibility. "Our goal is to completely avoid downtime and maintain the highest level of efficiency. It is precisely this challenge that drives us and motivates us every day", explains Sascha.

Sascha and his team are well aware of the importance of their work. "Automation is only as strong as the team that keeps it running." This attitude ensures that team spirit is not lost even in stressful situations.

One issue that is particularly close to Sascha's heart is the appreciation for his team.

"Maintenance and the team that carries it out are not seen as a cost factor at DocMorris. They are an investment in the efficiency and performance of the system."

After all, only if the maintenance team is well equipped and has the necessary knowledge can breakdowns be avoided and the smooth running of logistics ensured.

Sascha is optimistic about the future: "The traditional distinction between mechanics and electricians no longer works. We need all-rounders who are skilled in all areas—mechanics, electrics, IT."
